Vision in Business
The Problem
We have reached a crossroads that is unparalleled in modern history. Change is
occurring swiftly in all sectors of society. In business, research conducted over
a
dozen years ago showed that significant changes, those normally seen in a
generation (40 years), were occurring every six months. This trend has
accelerated since that time and it means that what saves us one year can sink
us the next.
We have reached the end of a cycle in business and society. There is no way
forward without a change of value and direction. If business attempts to go on as
it has, it will be forced to change through crisis, endemic systems failures or
bankruptcy.
The old underlying attitudes of competition, winning at all costs, getting the
most
for the least, using, taking what you can get, vested interests, dishonesty, lack
of
integrity and reactionary conservatism (which have long been the hidden
cornerstones of business), are now accelerating the current crisis. At present,
neither business nor society is aware that the end of a cycle is occurring, and
the
need for a change of direction is crucial.
Presently, businesses are still attempting to use such old solutions as increased
motivation, takeover, downsizing, hard work, or at best, a system change, which
do not address the needed direction and ethic change. To attempt to apply old
solutions increases work load, exhaustion, feelings of being stuck, stress, having
to carry it all, burnout, feelings of failure, and sometimes even death
temptation.
The experience of this stage is one of pressure, dissociation, false
independence, control, power struggle, and the feeling of deadness. People work
harder to stay in the same place, as they turn themselves and others into
objects. There are losses of heart, positive feelings, and enjoyment, while at the
same time there is an inability to receive in spite of hard work.
The Opportunity
What occurs in the next decade will direct what occurs in the next one hundred
years. What happens in the next one hundred years will direct what occurs in the
next millennium. The speed-up that is occurring in society has come about
because of the accelerating shift in consciousness. There are a great many
people in business and all walks of life with goodwill that are looking for a
better
way. The change embraced now can have a hundred-fold effect.
Business has great resources in leadership, management, efficiency,
organizational skills, networking, technological know-how, finance, capital and
proper use of resources. Business has begun moving beyond vested national
interests and is the only institution capable of leading the world to a better way
of
life in the next century that will include everyone.
If business is willing to step up and assume the mantle of leadership, it can lead
the work to unprecedented levels of partnership, peace and prosperity. To
accomplish this and help society make necessary changes, business will have to
re-make itself, changing the way it has conducted itself for thousands of years.
While the key element of exchange in business will remain constant, the aspects
of competition (the sign of vested, personal interests and lack of partnership)
must change to one of cooperation and common interests.
The Solution
In the Bible, it states, "Without vision people perish". The easiest way to bring
about a new world ethic and order will be for business to have the vision and
integrity necessary to take its natural place as the world leader in the 21st
century. To accomplish this, business must re-think itself and its purpose, its
possibilities, how to conduct itself, and how to lead the way forward in this time
of
transition. It will need to regain its heart, because partnership, the ability to
receive, creativity, and vision are possible only with heart. Business must shift
its
hidden ethic of taking to right-relationship, service and abundance (which is a
richness in one's whole quality of life, not just a plenitude of money).
If business succeeds in finding its vision, it will help take over the job of
government, bringing all of us into a common world community that has
unheralded levels of opportunity, mutuality and shared success.
